About

Who we are

I Do It Yourself (idoityourself.com.au) is an Australian handyman how-to blog run by a small team of working tradies and long-time DIYers. We write step-by-step walkthroughs for the jobs Australians actually do around the house — the ones search results turn up either thin “in 5 easy steps” lists, or US content that doesn’t apply to Aussie regulations and Aussie houses.

Everything published here has been done by us. We don’t aggregate, we don’t summarise other blogs, and we don’t write about jobs we haven’t done with our own tools.

The team

Mick — Lead handyman

Mick has 25 years on the tools across Newcastle and Sydney. Carpentry, fit-out, repairs, assembly, hanging, mounting, patching — if it’s the kind of job a home owner calls a handyman about, Mick has done it a thousand times. He writes most of our Assembly, Mounting and Home Repairs walkthroughs.

Jen — Painter and decorator

Jen runs a small painting and decorating business out of Melbourne and has been painting Australian homes for 15 years. She covers the Painting category with an emphasis on prep work — because that’s where 80% of the result comes from.

Tomo — Licensed plumber

Tomo is a licensed plumber in Brisbane writing safe-DIY content for I Do It Yourself. The strict line in Australian plumbing law is “what the home owner can legally do” — Tomo’s articles stay carefully on the right side of that line and tell you clearly when a job needs a callout.

Ash — Licensed electrician

Ash is a licensed electrician in Adelaide. The same legal line applies in electrical work — most fixed-wiring work is illegal for unlicensed people in Australia. Ash writes about what you can legally do, what you absolutely can’t, and how to recognise when something dangerous is happening at your switchboard.

Priya — Deep-clean specialist

Priya is a deep-cleaning specialist working in Sydney’s inner west. Her walkthroughs cover the cleaning techniques that actually work — including the chemistry behind why most “natural” cleaning shortcuts don’t.

Cal — Outdoor and landscaping

Cal is based in Perth and covers outdoor jobs: pressure washing, lawn and garden, driveway maintenance, BBQ assembly, and the seasonal stuff that keeps Aussie backyards in shape.

Editorial standards

  • We never publish a walkthrough we haven’t physically done.
  • We’re explicit about which jobs are legal DIY in Australia and which need a licensed trade.
  • We don’t take payment for editorial content. Sponsored content, when we publish it, is clearly labelled.
  • We credit guest contributors with a link to their business or social, where the work is genuinely theirs.
