Privacy Policy
Privacy at I Do It Yourself
This privacy policy explains how I Do It Yourself (idoityourself.com.au, “we”, “us”) collects and handles personal information. We’re an Australian publisher and we comply with the Australian Privacy Principles under the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth).
What we collect
- Email and submission content when you email us, submit a how-to walkthrough, or use a contact form
- Comments if you leave a comment on a post (your name, email, comment, and IP address)
- Anonymised analytics via Google Analytics (page views, country, device type — no personally identifying data)
- Server logs retained for 30 days (IP address, request URL, user agent — used for security and abuse prevention only)
What we don’t collect
- We don’t run targeted advertising trackers on this site
- We don’t sell email addresses or reader data to third parties
- We don’t use third-party trackers beyond Google Analytics with anonymisation enabled
How we use information
- Email — to reply to you, edit your submission, or respond to a question
- Comments — published on the relevant post; your email is not displayed publicly
- Analytics — to understand which walkthroughs are useful and what we should write next
- Logs — to detect and respond to abuse (brute-force attempts, scraping, etc.)
Cookies
This site uses minimal cookies — a session cookie for logged-in editors, anonymised Google Analytics cookies, and (if you comment) a cookie that remembers your name and email so you don’t retype them. You can clear or block these in your browser without affecting the content of the site.
Third parties
We use the following third-party services:
- Google Analytics for anonymised traffic analytics
- Mailchimp or similar if you opt in to a newsletter (we’ll add this once we launch one)
- Web hosting by our cPanel host on Australian infrastructure
Your rights
Under the Australian Privacy Principles, you can:
- Ask what personal information we hold about you
- Ask us to correct it if it’s wrong
- Ask us to delete it (we’ll do so unless we have a legal reason to keep it)
- Make a complaint to the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner if you’re not happy with how we’ve handled your data
Email [email protected] with any privacy request and we’ll respond within 30 days.
Security
We use HTTPS for all pages, secure password hashing, and server-side hardening. No internet service is 100% secure — if we ever have a breach affecting reader data, we’ll notify affected readers in line with the Notifiable Data Breaches scheme.
Changes to this policy
If we change this policy materially, we’ll post the change here and date it.
